In the visual arts, line, colour, and composition have been used to create powerfully expressive images. A lifetime of study would really not be enough to understand all the complexities related to the use of colour, especially in the context of images dominated by calligraphy. In this class we will examine the power of colour as an element of visual expression. We will also explore the impact of colour choices and colour combinations on the illusion of pictorial space. As a foundation for our work, Renaissance paintings that give the illusion of depth and deep space will be contrasted to the shallow and “flat” space painting of the abstract expressionist artists. We will attempt to apply the colour pallets and compositional elements of these paintings to the development of calligraphic pieces. Working with these two elements, composition and colour, students will learn to interpret poetry into a visual language that allows for the development of potent visual expressions. Materials: PENS: ruling pen, cola pen (or materials for making one: cola can, tape, scissors, wooden dowel) automatic pens (no. 4 or 5) a variety of smaller sized edged pens. BRUSHES: Medium-sized brushes (watercolour or Japanese calligraphy brushes are suggested) INK/ COLORS: Bottle of black sumi, 3 to 4 tubes of water colour (a red, blue, yellow, black) and tube of white gouache. PAPER: Pad of paper suitable for writing with ink at least 46cm x 31 cm in size. At least 5 sheets of larger good quality paper (for writing and watercolour) Biography: Thomas Ingmire, now living in San Francisco, was born in 1942 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His life as an artist is more by accident than design. This begins with his art training which is primarily the result of the study and completion of a BA in Landscape Architecture at The Ohio State University and an MLA at the University of California, Berkeley. Ingmire began to study calligraphy and medieval painting techniques in the early 1970's. One year of post graduate study was undertaken in the Art Department at California State, Los Angeles. Ingmire was elected to England's Society of Scribes and Illuminators craft membership status in 1977. Ingmire has become one of the forerunners of the calligraphic movement in the United States. He has taught calligraphy since 1978, conducting workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and several countries in Europe. Ingmire's teaching and his own work have focused on the exploration of the relationship between words and images. His work has been exhibited widely in the United States and can be found in The San Francisco Public Library's Special Collections, The Newberry Library in Chicago, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, as well as many other public and private collections throughout the world. Studying Graphic Design in Manchester as a young man, he has been a freelance Calligraphic Artist/Graphic Designer for over 50 years. He has been a pioneer in the field of calligraphy both in New Zealand and Australia, being the first person in both countries to hold one man exhibitions of calligraphic artworks. He is a Fellow of Society of Scribes & Illuminators in London as well as a Full Member of the New Zealand Society of Industrial Designers. Dave is recognised for his unique style, in that he manipulates the lettering to convey the sentiment and emotion of the poet so the work becomes a work of art rather than just lettering/calligraphy on a sheet of paper. He published ‘The Painted Word’ which contains 86 colour plates of his work and ‘Alphabetica’ which is a significant and unique Artist’s Book. In 1994 he opened the only Calligraphy Art Gallery in the world in Batemans Bay, NSW, Australia. Dave lives in Pomona in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
