WORKSHOP I (13.-15.6.2009)
a) Tom Perkins: Drawn Lettering 2 cr (all levels)
This course will cover the detailed drawing of Roman capitals alphabets with serifs, and sans serif. Italic lower case will also be covered time permitting. Students can use the letters to draw out short quotations, which can be painted with a pointed brush during the workshop, or kept for later use in letter-carving.
b) Gaynor Goffe: Exploring Italic Variations 2 cr Four Seasons Calligraphy Spring: (improvers)
Course description: This course is suitable for all levels as it will cover learning/improving basic italic (if required) and exploring a wide range of italic variations and using them in tutor -led exercises and projects, using colour in the pen and background.

WORKSHOP II (16.-18.6.2009)
a) Tom Perkins: Letter Carving in Stone 2cr (all levels)
This course will cover the basic technique of ‘V’ incising letters in stone, and is suitable for complete beginners and those with some carving experience. Practice carving stems, horizontals and curved strokes will lead to carving single letters, and one or two words, depending on previous experience and individual progress.
b) Gaynor Goffe: Versals & Variations 2cr (improvers)
This course is suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. Tuition will cover basic pen-written versals (as required), and explore a wide range of creative variations with versal letterforms. These will be used in tutor-led exercises and projects using colour in the pen and background.

WORKSHOP III (13.-18.6.2009)
a) Klaus-Peter Schäffel: Materials and Techniques of Illumination 4 cr (all levels)
Students will learn how to use watercolours and tempera, how to mix different colours and will be given some useful recipes. Students will use metal point nibs and quills during the workshop to do some practical work such us drawing of white vine initials, different gilding techniques and “paintings”. Also students will try three-layer painting with different brushes and colours according to medieval recipe books.
b) Gillian Hazeldine: Writing as Pattern / Pattern as Writing 4 cr (improvers)
Students will explore the essential visual quality of writing on the page; pattern and texture. They will approach this from a different angle, making patterns first and developing writing from them. Students will start with a series of suggested patterns, but they will be encouraged to experiment and develop letters from their own patterns. Student will need a good basic understanding of the italic hand and the capital form.

COURSE FEE
The course fee is determined by the period of study in the scale,
as follows: Workshop 2cr is 100 EUR. If you register for two 2cr
Workshops at a time, the price is 160 EUR. Workshop 4cr is 160
EUR. The course fee includes teaching and materials (except for
the stone), but exclude accommodation and meals.
