Region of Satakunta
An industrial region near to nature
Satakunta University of Applied Sciences is located on the west coast of Finland, in the Satakunta region. The total population of the region is approximately 240,000. The biggest city of the region is Pori which has more than 76,000 inhabitants.
Sea, river and lakes
Apart from the sea and lakes, landscapes of the Satakunta region are characterised by the Kokemäenjoki river which is the fifth longest river ind Finland and flows into the Gulf of Bothnia.
Metal, forest and ships
Metal, forest, food and technology are the most important branches of industry. Among other things local enterprises process copper, build ships an oil drilling rigs as well as manufacture paper and other products of forest industry.
History, culture and sports
The Satakunta region is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Finland: the earliest residents came here in the Stone Age and urban culture goes back to the Middle Ages.
Pori and Rauma are harbour and cultural cities. Both coastal towns are also rapidly developing centres of education and culture. Pori is known for its international Pori Jazzfestival. Old Rauma is included in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The Satakunta region also offers nature experiences and good opportunes for sports and hiking. Here you can also meet ardent fans of ice hockey, one of the favourite sports in Finland.
